Just Us
Just Us
People often ask where the heart behind this business came from. The truth is, it started long before products, plans, or big ideas. It started at home. It started with Just Us.
Growing up, I was the younger sister to my older sister, who lives with both physical and intellectual disabilities. From the outside, people may have only seen the challenges. They may have noticed appointments, routines, adjustments, or the things that looked different from other families. But what I saw was so much more.
I saw strength in ways many people miss. I saw determination in every task others took for granted. I saw patience, courage, humour, and a love that could fill a room. I saw my sister work twice as hard for things many people never have to think about. And I saw my family learn to adapt, support, and keep moving forward together.
School wasn’t always easy. There were moments of embarrassment, frustration, and feeling like no one else understood. Sometimes I felt torn between wanting to fit in and wanting to fiercely protect the person I loved most. There were days that felt heavy, where I carried emotions, I didn’t yet have the words for.
But there were also the positives - so many positives.
Because of my sister, I learned empathy early. I learned patience before many people my age ever needed to. I learned how to celebrate small wins, because small wins are often the biggest victories. I learned that progress looks different for everyone, and that worth is never measured by speed, grades, appearance, or what someone can do compared to others.
I learned how powerful kindness can be.
I learned how important it is to create spaces where people feel seen, respected, and included.
Most of all, I learned that family is not about perfection. It is about showing up for one another, again and again.
Just Us is a reminder of where it all began. Two sisters, growing up side by side, learning through challenge, laughter, tears, resilience, and unconditional love.
It shaped who I am. It shaped why I care so deeply. It shaped why I believe support should be personal, respectful, and real.
This story is for every family who has walked a similar path. For every sibling who grew up a little faster. For every person with disability who has taught the world more than the world often realises.
And for my sister - who never knew she was teaching me the whole time.
From that story came CALM by CARM.
CALM was built on the values that life taught me early: Care, Accessibility, Respect, and Movement. It represents the belief that support should feel human, thoughtful, and empowering - never rushed, cold, or transactional.
CARM also represents the people behind it, a foundation built through family, shared purpose, and real-life understanding. It is more than a name; it is a reminder that the strongest things are often built together.
CALM by CARM exists to create products, support, and spaces that make everyday life easier, brighter, and more inclusive. It is about helping people feel comfortable, confident, and valued exactly as they are.
Where others may see limitations, we see potential. Where others may overlook details, we focus on what truly matters. Where life feels noisy or overwhelming, we aim to bring calm.
Because this was never just a business idea.
It was built from lived experience, love, resilience, and the lessons of Just Us.
